I would also have to say there’s one I quite liked called, “Gray Lady Down,” a sort of late Charlton Heston movie. It’s pretty cool.

The Master really impressed me. I thought the performances in it were astonishing and I’m a big fan of his work in particular. I found it an intriguing piece of cinema that I couldn’t quite- I still can’t quite get my head around. It was wide open, and suggestful, and moving, very emotional and disturbing.

Moby Dick

A literary classic that wasn't recognized for its merits until decades after its publication, Herman Melville's Moby-Dick tells the tale of a whaling ship and its crew, who are carried progressively further out to sea by the fiery Captain Ahab. Obsessed with killing the massive whale, which had previously bitten off Ahab's leg, the seasoned seafarer steers his ship to confront the creature, while the rest of the shipmates, including the young narrator, Ishmael, and the harpoon expert, Queequeg, must contend with their increasingly dire journey. The book invariably lands on any short list of the greatest American novels.

People are always going on about how hard it is. It’s not that hard. I never understand that. What, because he describes rope and types of whales? I love that stuff.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world, and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. It is a rich and brilliant chronicle of life and death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the noble, ridiculous, beautiful, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility -- the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth -- these universal themes dominate the novel. Whether he is describing an affair of passion or the voracity of capitalism and the corruption of government, Gabriel García Márquez always writes with the simplicity, ease, and purity that are the mark of a master. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an accounting of the history of the human race.

Were there any artists that you liked when you were a kid? I liked Rothko. I think because I’m color blind, especially with reds and greens, and when I saw Rothko it was the first time I felt like I saw the distinction between reds, greens, and browns. I saw the red series when I was a kid.

Angkor Wat in Cambodia. You can wander through these incredible engraved stone labyrinths and along dried-up waterways. When I first went, there was very little development, just one hotel and a tiny little hut of an airport. The whole experience felt like something out of an adventure story. I went back about 10, 15 years later and it was still pretty much the same, except for a few more hotels.
