The Royal Tenenbaums

I love how Wes Anderson combines his unique aesthetic and storytelling with his quirky deadpan humor. To me, The Royal Tenenbaums is his masterpiece, where each character seems flawed, interesting and fleshed out and where we can relate to difficult family dynamics and how we acknowledge the damage they can cause. This film hits hard emotionally, but is perfectly blended with Wes Andersons brand of comedy. And the soundtrack is still perfect.

Lost in Translation

There is something so magical about watching these two lost souls, who yearn for meaning, purpose and connection, form a bond together. Sophia Coppola has a masterful way of making a film aesthetically pleasing while gaining your sympathy for her characters. While feelings of loneliness and isolation permeate the film, watching Charlotte and Bob seek solace in each other felt whole. You could really feel Coppola's sensitivity to her characters and their world that she envisioned. She is exceedingly gifted and underrated as a filmmaker.

Poor Things

I really like how this movie satirizes attraction: Bella's infant brain is a metaphor for how society oversexualizes infantilised women. We get to see the stages of rebirth to adulthood through the eyes of Bella Baxter, a hilariously blunt woman brought back to life through unethical means, and who's open to life and new experiences and finds herself and her place in the world despite what polite society thinks. Bella has to reprocess her own ideas of love, sex, shame, gender, intimacy, friendship, adventure, life, and work from her new fresh set of eyes. Her non-conformist ways unsurprisingly rub others the wrong way. The visuals of this film are pure magic! The costumes, the original score, the sets, all spectacular!

Pan's Labyrinth

This movie hits me right in the gut whenever I watch it. It's not an easy watch, but it is darkly beautiful, like a gothic Alice in Wonderland. The visuals are sublime and the world Guillermo del Toro creates is so solemn and melancholic, but hypnotic. This is why I love movies.

Boogie Nights

Paul Thomas Anderson is a magnificent filmmaker with impeccable storytelling. Boogie Nights was so fascinating. Watching Dirk Diggler go from a broken home to a makeshift family of adult filmmakers to his spectacularly chaotic downfall. There is not a dull moment in this film and it sits with you after you watch it. Ultimately, everyone in this film is just a broken person with dreams of stardom because deep down they crave love, admiration and appreciation. This industry is their way of escaping from the lives they no longer want, but it comes at a price.

The Matrix

I mean, it's a groundbreaking film. I think it was ahead of its time but still resonated with the audience. It still feels fresh after all these years and really opens up interesting conversations on reality and what life and society really is. Do we live in a simulation? Who knows. But one thing is for sure: Cinema, especially sci-fi and action, changed after this film.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

This martial arts film is so fantastical, so magical to watch. The visual beauty of the fight scenes and the story of a noblemans teen daughter who seeks out danger by stealing a sword and then uses her martial arts skills against those on the swords search, was such an enthralling and emotionally moving experience.

Ex Machina

A wealthy recluse with a brilliant mind and a drive to be innovative creates Artificial Intelligence gone wrong. This is such an insigntful, thought-provoking and provocative film, with themes of objectification, desire for connection, ethics, the human condition, existential crises, superficiality, and all the concepts executed perfectly. It's an interesting metaphor on Human/AI relationships and the separation of humanity from humans.

Like Water for Chocolate

This was a lovely adaptation of one of my favorite books. It's filled with forbidden love, stifling family traditions, making sacrifices for those you love, food, tragedy and a little bit of unexpected magic. The whole film wraps your emotions around its little finger and holds tight.

There Will Be Blood

Daniel day Lewis is so iconic in this film. Never in a million years would I have thought this subject matter would be interesting for me to watch, but Paul Thomas Anderson is such an incredible filmmaker that I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen. Watching Daniel Plainviews descent into madness was wild!

Bad Education

I really see this as a character study of what happens when people don't work through their traumas. Pedro Almodovar is one of my favorite directors and he always delivers. I love the energy and the aesthetic of vibrant colors that Pedro uses. The use of colors is interesting because he uses them to express the vibe of the scene and inner world of the characters. And he isn't afraid of using imagery that provokes the audience. This is a very heavy, complex, dark and raw film with extraordinary payoff.

Blade Runner

As a fan of scifi, especially of the dystopian variety, I couldn't make a favorites list without this film. I love its moody atmosphere, the action, the visuals, the costumes and story. The pacing is perfect, the acting is perfect.

Bonnie and Clyde

I'm sure there were some glaring historical inaccuracies in this film, but It doesn't bother me. This film was an absolute ride. Whether for notoriety or to make a statement against the establishment, people can do such morally reprehensible things for love, money and excitement!
