When it was first released, I was in university. I went to see it alone. In Japan, it only showed for two weeks. There were probably similar reactions in America after its release. Nowadays, it’s regarded as a classic, but when it was first revealed, there was a lot of criticism. Maybe Death Stranding is the same [laughs]. When Blade Runner was shown for the first time in movie theaters, it was totally different from other movies. The rhythm of how it begins and all, that’s why it catches my eyes. It’s something that’s really indigestible in the beginning and stays in me.

As a runner up, Tyson cited Blade Runner (1982), stating "This story was simultaneously deep and scary. But I never warmed to it the way so many lovers of the genre have.

As a cinephile, what's your favourite 70s sci-fi/dystopian/disaster movie? (Star Wars doesn't count.) - Blade Runner. (That’s cheating, I know. 1982.) I still haven’t seen Logan’s Run.

It’s one of those movies — it almost seems like they had a crystal ball when they were writing it; it’s so valid even today.

"We took inspiration from David Bowie and some of his looks as well," Fassbender says. "I liked the idea of having a feminine quality to him for sure." He also watched Blade Runner, The Man Who Fell To Earth, The Servant and Lawrence Of Arabia , plus studied Olympic diver Greg Louganis in order to capture a lithe, fluid physicality.

As a fan of scifi, especially of the dystopian variety, I couldn't make a favorites list without this film. I love its moody atmosphere, the action, the visuals, the costumes and story. The pacing is perfect, the acting is perfect.

But what I really admire more than anything else is technique. Say, in Blade Runner, or the camera work in Excalibur.

Pascal also mentions a couple of sci-fi pictures, including Basic Instinct (“three words: white cocktail dress”) and the original Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford. “I remember going and seeing the director’s cut in the movie theatre. I’d already seen the movie several times, but I saw it on the big screen for the first time, and I remember it was the first time that just a visual [scene], which was the introduction of the movie, made me cry.”

Some of my own favorite movies are premised on the idea that bio tech improves faster than other areas of tech. Blade Runner and Gattaca come to mind.
