Annie

Annie is a young, happy foster kid who's also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it's been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks—advised by his brilliant VP and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor—makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he's her guardian angel, but Annie's self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it's the other way around.

An in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation's history of racial inequality.

Boss filmmaker Ava DuVernay's powerful documentary on the prison industrial complex called “13th" made a deep impression on me. Named after the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which abolished slavery (except as punishment for a crime) the film pleads the case that our modern day incarceration is a new form of slavery.

I Am Not Your Negro

Working from the text of James Baldwin’s unfinished final novel, director Raoul Peck creates a meditation on what it means to be Black in the United States.

“I Am Not Your Negro” is an amazing Raoul Peck-directed documentary based on writer and social critic James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript “Remember This House.” Samuel L. Jackson narrates the film, which digs into racism and the civil rights movement. Everyone should see it!

He’s awesome,” says Zendaya of steamy actor Michael B. Jordan. “He’s a great actor, and Fruitvale Station was one of those films I was personally connected to because I’m from Oakland and I remember when it happened.”
