That's what makes this scene so hard to watch: guys are having, at that moment, to make a decision between staying with their friend and dying together or moving forward to try and accomplish the mission. It's a horrible situation to be in.

The Pledge to America

As heard on The Dan Bogino Show and the Jocko Podcast “One of the most powerful books I’ve read in a long time.” —Dan Bongino Retired Navy SEAL Drago Dzieran takes readers behind the scenes of his incredible life, from an impoverished childhood in Communist-controlled Poland to his time as a political prisoner, to his twenty years as a member of the United States military’s most elite fighting force.Everything I have, I owe to America—the greatest country in the world. I have been fighting oppression and defending freedom my entire life. When I became a United States citizen, I felt it was my moral obligation to give back to this country and the people who had given me freedom. I wanted to serve my new country in the best capacity I could, so when the first Persian Gulf War broke out, I decided to join the military. During my Navy career, I performed over one hundred combat direct action missions in Iraq from 2003 to 2005. My chance to live as a free man is only possible because of the ideals the founding fathers fought for and that have been carried forward to this day by Americans. Every person has a voice, and every voice matters. I will continue to encourage others to get involved, stand up, and preserve and cherish the freedom and liberty we have in America.

Bounce Back

Twelve principles to heal after trauma and overcome adversity—from New York Times bestselling author and retired US Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills “This book is a master class in recovery, renewal, and recalibration. Travis does not make excuses. Travis does not complain. Travis is not held back by challenges he faces—he is propelled forward by them. Let’s be more like Travis.” —From the Foreword by Jocko Willink We all have those moments, the ones where we are set adrift by a life-changing event. Yet we often lack the ability to parse these moments, understand how to respond, and move beyond them. Travis Mills, a veteran and a quadruple amputee, was confronted with this in the wake of the incident that claimed his limbs and changed the trajectory of his life forever. In Bounce Back, Travis reveals the path that helped him through tough times—and allowed him to continue to be a dedicated family man, husband, and father to two amazing children. Along the way to his physical and emotional recovery, Travis developed the tools to keep moving forward, and he has outlined them in twelve principles, including: • That Dog Don’t Hunt—Stop Torturing Yourself and Stop Asking Why • Snap Your Fingers, Wiggle Your Toes, and Get the F*** Out of Bed—Create Small, Achievable Goals for Moving Forward • Stay Within the Guard Rails—Manage Your Emotions and Control Your Attitude • Get a Battle Buddy—Never Underestimate the Power of a Support System • Serve—Find Your Voice, Build on Your Strengths, and Live Meaningfully Travis’s message—that we cannot control what happens to us, and we can only focus on how we react and move forward—will inspire survivors from all walks of life.

You can become better at it.Committing yourself to fitness only fuels your beliefs. You gotta believe to achieve.Cameron Hanes discovered his true passion for bowhunting when he was twenty. Inspired by the physical challenges of stalking elk in the Oregon wilderness—traversing mountainous terrain, braving erratic weather, and evading his quarry’s even more dangerous predators—he began an ever-evolving journey of self-improvement. To become the best bowhunter of wild elk, to the caliber he believed he could be, Cam realized he would need more than archery skills. He would need the stamina and strength that could only come from an athletic training regimen of long-distance running and heavy-weight lifting. And every day for more than thirty years, Cam has put in the work, building miles and muscles, pushing through pain with a single-minded focus on the only goal worth having—besting himself time and again.Part memoir, part motivational manifesto, Endure reveals how Cam—a self-professed average guy—put himself through the paces to live the life of an expert bowhunter, respected writer, and family man. With discipline, sacrifice, resilience, a hard work ethic, and a belief in his own capabilities, Cam not only accomplished his dreams but continues to surpass them. There is no secret to his success except relentless determination and loyal dedication to his own self-worth.If Cam can do it, we all can. Everyone has what it takes to endure adversity so we can rise above average, be the best we can be, and enjoy living life to the fullest.

Up from Slavery

First published in 1901, Up From Slavery is one of the classic books from the era of American slavery. In it, Booker T. Washington details his rise from a child born into slavery to a free man with a college education. He offers readers his views on the future of blacks in America, charting a course for their development that starts with an education in practical trades. By proving themselves to be important parts of society, he believed they would be granted civil rights without a bloody struggle. Students of history will find this an essential read from the dawning of the civil rights struggle in America. American author BOOKER T. WASHINGTON (1856-1915) was born to a white father and black slave mother in Virginia. His Atlanta Address of 1895 brought him great acclaim, and for the rest of his life he remained a respected figure in the African American community. Among his most influential writings is an article for Atlantic Monthly called "The Awakening of the Negro" (1896).

By Water Beneath the Walls

A gripping history chronicling the fits and starts of American special operations and the ultimate rise of the Navy SEALs from unarmed frogmen to elite, go-anywhere commandos—as told by one of their own.“Deeply researched, well organized, and incredibly engaging . . . This is our legacy with all the warts, the challenges, and the heroics in one concise volume.”—Admiral William H. McRaven, #1 New York Times bestselling author and former commander, United States Special Operations CommandHow did the US Navy—the branch of the US military tasked with patrolling the oceans—ever manage to produce a unit of raiders trained to operate on land? And how, against all odds, did that unit become one of the world’s most elite commando forces, routinely striking thousands of miles from the water on the battlefields of Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, even Central Africa?Behind the SEALs’ improbable rise lies the most remarkable underdog story in American military history—and in these pages, former Navy SEAL Benjamin H. Milligan captures it as never before.Told through the eyes of remarkable leaders and racing from one longshot, hair-curling raid to the next, By Water Beneath the Walls is the tale of the unit’s heroic naval predecessors, and the evolution of the SEALs themselves. But it’s also the story of the forging of American special operations as a whole—and how the SEALs emerged from the fires as America’s first permanent commando force when again and again some other unit seemed predestined to seize that role. Here Milligan thrillingly captures the outsize feats of the SEALs’ frogmen forefathers in World War II, the Korean War, and elsewhere, even as he plunges us into the second front of interservice rivalries and personal ambition that shaped the SEALs’ evolution. In equally vivid, masterful detail, he chronicles key early missions undertaken by units like the Marine Raiders, Army Rangers, and Green Berets, showing us how these fateful, bloody moments helped create the modern American commando—even as they opened up pivotal opportunities for the Navy. Finally, he takes us alongside as the SEALs at last seize the mantle of commando raiding, and discover the missions of capture/kill and counterterrorism that would define them for decades to come.Written with the insight that can only come from a combat veteran and a member of the book’s tribe, By Water Beneath the Walls is an essential new history of the SEAL teams, a crackling account of desperate last stands and unforgettable characters accomplishing the impossible—and a riveting epic of the dawn of American special operations.
