Philip Marlowe – Raymond Chandler featured the private eye in eight novels, the first of which was published in 1939. Marlowe is one of the most popular fictional detectives ever adapted for the big screen. Dick Powell was the first to play him (“Murder, My Sweet”), followed immediately by the most famous Marlowe incarnation ever – Humphrey Bogart in “The Big Sleep.” Other actors who have played Marlowe in films and on television include James Caan, Danny Glover, Powers Boothe, Elliott Gould, James Garner, George Montgomery and, of course, Robert Mitchum.

Gone Baby Gone

When 4 year old Amanda McCready disappears from her home and the police make little headway in solving the case, the girl's aunt, Beatrice McCready hires two private detectives, Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. The detectives freely admit that they have little experience with this type of case, but the family wants them for two reasons - they're not cops and they know the tough neighborhood in which they all live. As the case progresses, Kenzie and Gennaro face drug dealers, gangs and pedophiles. When they are about to solve the case, they are faced with a moral dilemma that tears them apart.

Boston author Dennis Lehane (“Mystic River,” “Shutter Island”) introduced this detective in the 1994 novel “A Drink Before the War.” The character made the leap to the big screen in the well-received 2007 film “Gone Baby Gone,” starring Casey Affleck as the detective. It marked Ben Affleck’s debut as a director, which is significant now because his third directorial effort, “Argo,” is generating Oscar buzz.

Chinatown

Private eye Jake Gittes lives off of the murky moral climate of sunbaked, pre-World War II Southern California. Hired by a beautiful socialite to investigate her husband's extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together.
James Patterson
Writer
J.J. Gittes – Legendary screenwriter Robert Towne created a gumshoe for the ages in Jake Gittes, the character brought to life in the classic 1974 film “Chinatown” by Jack Nicholson (with a little help from director Roman Polanski). Gittes is a former LAPD officer who learned how to bend the rules during his assignment to a maddening section of downtown Los Angeles called Chinatown. At the end of the movie, a frustrated Gittes stares off in the distance while a cop buddy tries to console him with the memorable line: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”

I haven't been a big cowboy fan since I was around 10 but this is a good one. Cool story, strong characters and acting, nice art direction. Besides, I never saw Russell Crowe movie that I didn't like.

The movie feels like two episodes of the PBS TV show. The film is lush, the dialogue very British, it’s a high soap from beginning to end.

Rocketman

The story of Elton John's life, from his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.

I like this a lot - more than I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody - although I'm a little bigger Queen than Elton John music fan. The elite performance by Aaron Egerton was terrific and the film was really nicely directed. The small glitch for me was that the music and dance tended to gloss over how painful and difficult Elton John's life seemed to have been.

Australian film about a crime family in Sydney. Well told, solid performances. Builds tension slowly, which might turn off some people.

I really loved this movie until the final twenty minutes or so. The emotional thrust remained honest and true, but I felt the storytelling flagged just a little. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are really terrific in their parts (but it is a cowboy movie).
