Appearing in an interview, alongside Far From Home co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, the pair were quizzed on their favourite Marvel movie. Awkwardly neither of them mentioned either of the Spider-Man films, though most fans wouldn’t argue with their choice. Without a beat, Holland said: “I like Thor: Ragnarok” with Gyllenhaal adding: “I was just about to say that.”

Secrets & Lies is a great Mike Lee movie I think over time it's watching something that seems so simple. I'm obsessed with the complexity you can fit within something that looks seemingly so simple.

The original Point Break is that is again a time where like they were making movies where the performances are great and the movie is really entertaining. I was and still am a huge Patrick Swayze fan.

Jake Gyllenhaal

I think my favorite like love / sexiness is the scene in Out of Sight. Not only because obviously you have Jennifer Lopez, George Clooney and you know there's great writing and great directing. But I think primarily because the editor is making love with the story at the same time as the actors are actually making love in the in the scene.

I don’t know if you can say one of them but Adam’s Rib and Woman of the Year, like the Hepburn/Tracy movies. The two of them together will never, ever age. There are scenes in those movies together that could be when you’re watching them today, in this moment. I remember those movies and my mother would always love those movies, and I would watch those movies with her.

The Poems of Wilfred Owen

With an Introduction and Notes by Owen Knowles, University of Hull. In his draft Preface, Wilfred Owen includes his well-known statement 'My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity'. All of his important poems were written in just over a year, and 'Dulce et Decorum Est', 'S.I.W.', 'Futility' and 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' still have an astonishing power to move the reader. Owen pointed out that 'All a poet can do today is to warn. That is why all true Poets must be truthful'. His warning was based on his acute observation of the soldiers with whom he served on the Western Front, and his poems reflect the horror and the waste of the First World War. This volume contains all Owen's best-known poems, only four of which were published in his lifetime. He was killed a week before the Armistice in November 1918.

Gyllenhaal read the poem "Dulce et Decorum Est," by Wilfred Owen, to the guests gathered to support improving comprehensive mental-health care for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each of the evening's featured speakers shared a war-themed piece that touched on the hardships a family faces when a loved one enlists, enters combat and then returns home to uncertain circumstances or in poor physical or mental shape.

To Kill a Mockingbird

"Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel--a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with rich humor and unswerving honesty the irrationality of adult attitudes toward race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence, and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina and quiet heroism of one man's struggle for justice--but the weight of history will only tolerate so much. One of the best-loved classics of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has earned many distinctions since its original publication in 1960. It has won the Pulitzer Prize, been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than thirty million copies worldwide, and been made into an enormously popular movie. Most recent, librarians across the country gave the book the highest of honors by voting it the best novel of the century (Library Journal). HarperCollins is proud to celebrate the anniversary of the book's publication with this special hardcover edition.

John Adams

In this powerful, epic biography, David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution; who rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; who was learned beyond all but a few and regarded by some as "out of his senses"; and whose marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the most moving love stories in American history. This is history on a grand scale -- a book about politics and war and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, John Adams is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.
Jake Gyllenhaal
Actor
Gyllenhaal has been rereading David McCullough’s biography of the second US president, John Adams, and is unsettling himself by noticing the “surprising and terrifying correlations in America to the civil war and pre-civil war times”.

The Great British Bake Off

This British television baking competition selects from amongst its competitors the best amateur baker. The series is credited with reinvigorating interest in baking throughout the UK, and many of its participants, including winners, have gone on to start a career based on baking.
Jake Gyllenhaal
Actor
Gyllenhaal makes a peculiar and quite interesting observation about the particular world of the The Great British Bake Off: “There’s somewhat of a perversion to it, in that you can never, ever taste nor smell what it is that you see. You can watch people build Legos, you don’t need to smell Legos. You don’t need to taste them, you can watch it. But when you watch somebody build like a tiramisu… You’re never gonna taste that! No. You’re never gonna taste that! And all you have is someone describing it to you. You know, it’s Mary Berry and other hosts that tell you, and they’re experts, and that’s great. But there’s something about it that I think, particularly as a Brit, you might find very interesting.”

his is “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso,” by Saint-Saëns, it’s the Philadelphia Orchestra with Sarah Chang. I just imagine the finger work of this soloist and people who play fretless instruments always boggle me. I’m always am amazed like, ‘That has no frets?!’ *laughs* And this in particular, I’m taken so many places with this song. It really broke me out as a kid into the emotions and the intensity of classical music.

I would pick “The Fox” and this version is by Burl Ives. My father used to sing this to me -- and I love Burl Ives just as a character, just as a musician -- and when I was a little kid we were robbed outside of our house. We were driving home, we pulled up and we were robbed and ever since I was always really nervous about falling asleep, you know, naturally, and so my dad would sing this to me before I’d go to bed.

I would love to collaborate with Leonard Bernstein, if he were alive. He was one of the most prolific, extraordinary American artists that ever lived. His personality and his talent are unmatched. He was a full-hearted, courageous human being, someone whose work I have admired since I was young, and I would love to be able to sit down and speak with him.
