The Crown

The gripping, decades-spanning inside story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Prime Ministers who shaped Britain's post-war destiny. The Crown tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. Two houses, two courts, one Crown.

I've watched @TheCrownNetflix several times to study its script. Olivia Colman is a treasure throughout, like many of the cast. But Charles Dance (known to many as Tywin Lannister) delivers a hypnotic reading of the final stanza of Kipling's "Mandalay" that could not be bettered.

Season One of “Manhattan” was—in both writing and performances—pretty much the apotheosis of the form. Stunningly rich, real, relevant. And… smart. One of those: “If that’s all I ever do, I did something great”achievements. Belated kudos to all involved.

Black Sails

The pirate adventures of Captain Flint and his men twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

Also, “Black Sails” proved that the naval scenes can now be effectively handled in a series format. How about a limited series instead of a conventional feature sequel?

Set in Galway, the series stars Iain Glen in the eponymous role of Jack Taylor, a former officer with the Garda Síochána who becomes a "finder" after leaving the service. Taylor is a man who goes looking for clues where others have not bothered to. He also knows the streets of his hometown like the back of his hand.

Reading the Jack Taylor novels by Irish author Ken Bruen. Mighty. Also an atmospheric series on Netflix starring Iain Glen.

It's time to bring back Woody and Matthew for the true "True Detective, Season 2." Where are Rust and Marty now? Damn, that was a killer show. A move forward for the genre. Familiar elements redeployed to support real character development/evolution. Primal & civic evil meshed.

The Last Kingdom

A show of heroic deeds and epic battles with a thematic depth that embraces politics, religion, warfare, courage, love, loyalty and our universal search for identity. Combining real historical figures and events with fictional characters, it is the story of how a people combined their strength under one of the most iconic kings of history in order to reclaim their land for themselves and build a place they call home.

Few series hold true for 5 seasons. @TheLastKingdom did—in triumph! “Vikings,” sadly, lost its way. But inspired adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s books & wonderful actors led by Alexander Dreymon & David Dawson lift TLK to the top rank. Can’t recommend this show highly enough!

Occupied

In the near future, Norway is occupied by Russia on behalf of the European Union, due to the fact that the newly elected environmental friendly Norwegian government has stopped the all important oil- and gas-production in the North Sea.

Re-watching the excellent @Occupied_series —about a “soft occupation” of Norway by Russia. Apart from smart plotting, they do an amazing job of creating a huge canvas with what I assume is a TV budget. Has sort of a Norwegian Ridley Scott feel.

After only one day in Norway, Erling receives a text message saying an old acquaintance from Afghanistan is in Oslo - which can mean only one thing: A woman's life is in danger

I've discovered a fantastic cable TV show: the Norwegian #NOBEL on Netflix. Afghan war fallout comes to Oslo. Writing and acting right up there with @BabylonBerlin, only Nobel portrays absolute realism while Babylon Berlin has stunning, hypnotic surrealism atop its grittiness.

W Season 2 Ep 9 #Ozark joined the first rank of cable TV writing. Insightful and true depiction of marriage/family, bookended by "Wichita Lineman." Bravo!
