When I was 6 years old, my Mum agreed to buy me a record in exchange for having my tooth pulled at the dentist in Northwood Hills. I chose Doris Day’s recording of Secret Love/The Deadwood Stage. I loved her music, and I still do today.

This song reminds me of when I was in the depths of despair during my addiction. I always used to put this on and I used to sit there and cry, thinking: ‘I won’t give up, I’ll be well one day.

One of the greatest memories of my life is when he came on stage, and the ovation that he got. We all had tears in our eyes.

He was beginning to become famous before me. He’d written this song, which I was crazy about. And he was my piano-playing idol at that time, and probably still is.

I chose this track because it just takes off; her piano playing, the whole thing. In those days, you did two-three takes. This was live, there was no overdubbing. And boy, if you don’t get excited by this kind of music then I fear for you.

This music changed my life because of the way the songs were written; the lyrics, the musicianship.

This was an incredible record. Just astonishing. I’d been a Motown fan anyway, but this was a different kind of Motown record. It was, I think, one of the greatest records of all time. It’s just full of energy. It was my song of that summer.

‘We Can Work It Out’ is such a wonderful song, and Stevie Wonder did an amazing version of it.

And ‘Lucille’… that voice! That look! He was the first black artist that I’d seen doing rock and roll, and he was electrifying. I loved him so much.

Great Balls of Fire’ – as much as Elvis Presley changed my life with ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ – being a piano player, this changed my life.

This record changed my life and it changed the face of music. My mum bought a record every week, and she said: ‘I heard this record in the store and I’ve never heard anything like it, so I had to buy it.’ She put it on and it changed my life and propelled me into my love of rock and roll.
