When you first saw The Truman Show, did anyone else walk around for the next week not picking your nose JUST in case?

I was 12 when my dad showed me "Gentlemen's Agreement." I just watched it again and it's still lovely.

I think it is a lovely film, and it was fantastically executed by the first time feature director, Hugh and the lovely Zac Efron.

Come on, kids! Let's put on a show! Gorgeous dames hoof their way through this film about putting on a Broadway show and it's heaven. If you haven't seen it, get ready for classic songs you didn't even know you knew, and some of the best tap dancing since that time you watched Christopher Walken in Peter Pan Live!.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

This simple romantic tragedy begins in 1957. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in her widowed mother's chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, he and Geneviève make love. She becomes pregnant and must choose between waiting for Guy's return or accepting an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant.

Technically an opera, as everything in the film is sung, Catherine Deneuve stars as a humble umbrella salesgirl who falls in love. The look of the film is stunning and sumptuous, and the music is unassuming and lovely. I would also recommend having this on in the background if you're hosting a party.

Chicago

Rob Marshall brought back the movie musical with this absolutely stunning film. That alone should make me love it but as a bonus, I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out and was on a fair few pain killers when I saw it. On Codeine, "Cell Block Tango" was a life-altering experience.

Terms of Endearment

Yeah, I saw that movie a little late. I saw it probably when I was 18 or something. It was one of those movies where I felt like such an idiot because I had obviously heard about it for years and years. And then you see it and you’re like, “This is great!” and you feel like you’ve discovered something because it’s so great and you want to tell your friends about it, and they’re like, “Yeah, we know, idiot. We’ve been telling you to see it forever.” That same kind of thing happened with Terms of Endearment, and it’s like, “Oh right, there’s a reason that The Breakfast Club and Terms of Endearment are some of the most popular movies of all time.”

The Breakfast Club

Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under a power-hungry principal. The disparate group includes rebel John, princess Claire, outcast Allison, brainy Brian and Andrew, the jock. Each has a chance to tell his or her story, making the others see them a little differently -- and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.

I know this is not the best Woody Allen film I’ve ever seen, but it’s still my personal favorite. Only Woody Allen could mix highbrow Bergman homages and Marx Brothers-esque slapstick. I also love how much fun he seems to be having with the great Diane Keaton. If only there were a blooper reel.

Winter Light

A Swedish pastor fails a loving woman, a suicidal fisherman and God.

I love all the Bergman films I’ve seen, but this spoke to me personally in a really profound way. I remember feeling very shaken after watching it. I feel like the greatest thing a writer or filmmaker can do is say something so honest that most people wouldn’t be brave enough and that’s what I love about this film. The characters are deeply flawed and sometimes very ugly to each other, but that’s why it’s so effective.

Wet Hot American Summer

The setting is Camp Firewood, the year 1981. It's the last day before everyone goes back to the real world, but there's still a summer's worth of unfinished business to resolve. At the center of the action is camp director Beth, who struggles to keep order while she falls in love with the local astrophysics professor. He is busy trying to save the camp from a deadly piece of NASA's Skylab which is hurtling toward earth. All that, plus: a dangerous waterfall rescue, love triangles, misfits, cool kids, and talking vegetable cans. The questions will all be resolved, of course, at the big talent show at the end of the day.

The first time I watched this movie was with a group of friends who are obsessed with it. I asked to watch it again the following three nights. It’s absurd, it has the most amazing cast, and it’s infinitely quotable. It’s a perfect desert island movie.

His Girl Friday

Hildy, the journalist former wife of newspaper editor Walter Burns, visits his office to inform him that she's engaged and will be getting remarried the next day. Walter can't let that happen and frames the fiancé, Bruce Baldwin, for one thing after another, to keep him temporarily held in prison, while trying to steer Hildy into returning to her old job as his employee.

His Girl Friday is funny because it’s… In that way that I think In Bruges and JCVD are just perfect, it is perfect. It is beyond perfect. It is transcendently flawless for like the first 45 minutes, and then it kind of goes off into crazy town. But you still stay with it, and the tone completely changes and it gets really weird and dark, but I guess that’s what happens in some of those movies. But it’s the perfect distillation of that kind of fast-talking, thin-line-between-love-and-hate style relationship. It would definitely be the kind of movie that, if somebody was trying to get into movies from the ’30s and ’40s and wanted that kind of patter and that kind of style, I would definitely point them in that direction. The Women is my favorite film, but it’s kind of a lot to take in, and I would understand if it scared people off a little bit. Whereas if you watch the first 20 minutes of His Girl Friday, you’re in. It’s like a starter course for that kind of film.

In Bruges

Ray and Ken, two hit men, are in Bruges, Belgium, waiting for their next mission. While they are there they have time to think and discuss their previous assignment. When the mission is revealed to Ken, it is not what he expected.

In Bruges is another one like that. It’s just flawless, like, it’s so tight. The ending is perfect. Just when you’re like, “Oh, they’re gonna bring in this Ralph Fiennes character and he’s just not gonna be able to compete with the main cast,” and he just crushes it and is doing something completely different. Oh, he’s just heaven.

JCVD

Between his tax problems and his legal battle with his wife for the custody of his daughter, these are hard times for the action movie star who finds that even Steven Seagal has pinched a role from him! Jean-Claude Van Damme returns to the country of his birth to seek the peace and tranquility he can no longer enjoy in the United States.
Anna Kendrick
Actress
That was one of those movies I saw and it’s… I’m sure that there are movies that are more important, you know? But it was one of those movies that I saw, and it was just perfect, if that makes sense. It’s like all movies are like listening to a bunch of different instruments playing at the same time, and suddenly they all sync up for certain moments, and there’s other times where it’s not quite in rhythm. JCVD was just bang-on the entire time. It was just so lean and solid and this perfect blend of dark humor and some really genuinely touching moments. That moment when he goes up into the loft and it’s all very surreal, and he’s crying, I was like, “This is for real, man. This has really got me.”
