Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling-type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. The sport can either be theatrical for entertainment (see professional wrestling), or genuinely competitive. A wrestling bout is a physical competition, between two (occasionally more) competitors or sparring partners, who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position. There are a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. Wrestling techniques have been incorporated into other martial arts as well as military hand-to-hand combat systems. The term wrestling is attested in late Old English, as wræstlunge (glossing palestram).

He was a former special forces soldier, as mentioned by many. Special forces soldiers don’t rely on technical techniques or any that requires a great deal of movement and expended energy. Instead, they combine the most barebones yet effective and simple fundamental techniques from styles like Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Japanese jujutsu, Chinese Qinna (or Chin Na, a set of techniques focusing on joint locks), boxing, and wrestling, all of which are renowned for their effectiveness in simple self-defence circumstances, in their training. More likely than not, special forces utilize Krav Maga.
