Mabel Longhetti, desperate and lonely, is married to a Los Angeles municipal construction worker, Nick. Increasingly unstable, especially in the company of others, she craves happiness, but her extremely volatile behavior convinces Nick that she poses a danger to their family and decides to commit her to an institution for six months. Alone with a trio of kids to raise on his own, he awaits her return, which holds more than a few surprises.

My favorite — my number one favorite, actually — is A Woman Under the Influence. [Gena Rowlands] is just… I respect and admire her so much as an actress. I just think that performance is so brave and extraordinary.

Woman and Opening Night show Gena Rowlands at her best. These films contain performances that will never be matched, but are also structural innovations. I wish I could make movies like this.

Midnight Express is so… That and A Woman under the Influence were the first two movies I ever watched and went, “That is not a movie.” You do not see anyone going, “Cut! I’ll be in my f***ing trailer!” You watch that s*** and you are like, you are in that. So Midnight Express; that is really great filmmaking.

One of my eternal favorites is A Woman Under the Influence. That’s kind of the center of everything for me. It’s such beautiful, simple filmmaking. I first saw it about 10 years ago, maybe. It just really struck something in me that I thought, “My god, that just looks like such a great acting piece.”

I was torn between A Woman Under the Influence and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

I can either choose The Last Picture Show, Old School, or A Woman Under the Influence.

I would probably say A Woman Under the Influence [for my fifth movie], although it’s a deep, deep tie between that and the movie Opening Night. And A Woman Under the Influence was, I think, more celebrated, but Opening Night might resonate more with me.
