The avocado (Persea americana), a tree likely originating from south-central Mexico, is classified as a member of the flowering plant family Lauraceae. Avocados are commercially valuable and are cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. In 2017, Mexico produced 34% of the world supply of avocados.

Eating an avocado a day lowered small, dense LDL particles and lowered oxidized LDL, both of which are associated with heart disease. It also increased lutein levels which is linked to improved brain function (randomized controlled trial).
