Carolines on Broadway

Carolines on Broadway is a venue for stand-up comedy located in Times Square in New York City on Broadway between 49th and 50th Street. It is one of the most established, famous, and recognized stand-up comedy clubs in the United States. Located in the heart of New York Cityʼs Times Square district, Carolines on Broadway is widely regarded as “Americaʼs Premier Comedy Nightclub,” presenting the best live comedy entertainment seven nights a week, 365 days a year. Just steps from many of Broadwayʼs most well-known theaters, Carolines on Broadway provides the same quality entertainment one has come to expect of New Yorkʼs legendary Great White Way. Carolines first opened as a cabaret in the cityʼs Chelsea neighborhood in 1981. Owner Caroline Hirsch, a lifelong comedy fan, soon began booking comedians. The comedy acts – which included now legendary performers like Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Rosie OʼDonnell and Jay Leno – were a tremendous success, and Carolines soon became a full-fledged comedy nightclub. As comedyʼs popularity surged throughout the 80s and into the 90s, so did Carolinesʼ popularity. Carolines moved to New Yorkʼs historic South Street Seaport where it thrived and established itself as the countryʼs top comedy venue. It also served as home to the A&E Networkʼs highly successful series, “Carolineʼs Comedy Hour.” When Hirsch relocated the club to its grand setting in Times Square in 1992, the club began presenting comedians in a sophisticated, state-of-the-art nightclub, bringing the comedy experience to new heights as it showcased the newly revitalized Times Square district on its A&E show. “Carolines Comedy Hour” ultimately won a CableACE award for "Best Stand-Up Comedy Series." Carolines on Broadway has hosted countless large-scale fund-raising events throughout the years. Hirsch, a long-time Ms. Foundation board member, created an annual fundraiser for The Foundation that has continued to grow each year. “The Ms. Foundationʼs Women of Comedy” special aired on the Lifetime Television Network to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Ms. Foundation. Additionally, Carolines hosts a highly successful annual fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, which honors the late Madeline Kahn, and an annual star-studded fundraiser for The Scleroderma Research Foundation. Hirsch is a founding partner of the New York Comedy Festival, a highly successful week-long comedy festival that has graced some of New Yorkʼs most prestigious venues – including Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Town Hall, The ApolloTheater and Lincoln Center – and showcased such comic luminaries as Bill Maher, Sarah Silverman, Ricky Gervais, Conan O'Brien, Dane Cook, Kevin Hart, Denis Leary, Bill Maher, Conan O'Brien, Kathy Griffin, Artie Lange, Rosie OʼDonnell and Steven Wright, to name a few, over the past nine years. The NYCF, presented in association with tbs, celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in 2018. Today, Carolines on Broadway holds center stage in the heart of Times Square as one of New York Cityʼs most popular and enduring nightspots and as the cityʼs only genuine nightclub. It is a New York institution and is one of the cornerstones in the revitalization of Times Square. The 300-seat club with an elegant decor received critical acclaim when it received the American Institute of Architecture Award for Best Interior Club Design and was featured on the cover of Interior Design Magazine. As one of the countryʼs most popular destinations for live entertainment, Carolines on Broadway today stands as the crowning achievement of Caroline Hirsch's extraordinary 30-year career. As the reigning queen of the New York comedy scene, Caroline Hirsch continues to prove that she is both an innovator and visionary in the fast-paced, constantly evolving entertainment industry. Carolines on Broadway celebrated twenty years of keeping New York and the world laughing with a gala comedy concert at Carnegie Hall in 2003 featuring a whoʼs who of comedy luminaries. Today, the club continues its proud tradition of presenting the very biggest and brightest stars on comedyʼs grandest stage, reaffirming its position as the home of “The Funniest Show on Broadway.”

Bermuda

Bermuda (in full, the Islands of Bermuda) is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is approximately east-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina; south of Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia; and northeast of Cuba. The capital city is Hamilton. Bermuda is self-governing, with its own constitution and government and a Parliament which makes local laws. The United Kingdom retains responsibility for defence and foreign relations. As of July 2018, it has a population of 71,176, making it the most populous of the British overseas territories. Bermuda's two largest economic sectors are offshore insurance and reinsurance, and tourism. Bermuda had one of the world's highest GDP per capita for most of the 20th century. It has a subtropical climate and lies in the hurricane belt and thus is prone to related severe weather; however, it is somewhat protected by a coral reef that surrounds the island and its position at the north of the belt, which limits the direction and severity of approaching storms.

Eritrea

Eritrea (officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the Horn of Africa, with its capital at Asmara. It is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of Eritrea have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. The nation has a total area of approximately and includes the Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands. Eritrea is a multi-ethnic country, with nine recognized ethnic groups in its population of around million. Tigrinya, Arabic, and English serve as the three working languages. The Kingdom of Aksum, covering much of modern-day Eritrea and northern Ethiopia, was established during the first or second centuries AD. It adopted Christianity around the middle of the fourth century. In medieval times much of Eritrea fell under the Medri Bahri kingdom, with a smaller region being part of Hamasien. The creation of modern-day Eritrea is a result of the incorporation of independent, distinct kingdoms and sultanates (for example, Medri Bahri and the Sultanate of Aussa) eventually resulting in the formation of Italian Eritrea. After the defeat of the Italian colonial army in 1942, Eritrea was administered by the British Military Administration until 1952. Following the UN General Assembly decision, in 1952, Eritrea would govern itself with a local Eritrean parliament but for foreign affairs and defense it would enter into a federal status with Ethiopia for a period of 10 years. However, in 1962 the government of Ethiopia annulled the Eritrean parliament and formally annexed Eritrea, but the Eritreans who had argued for complete Eritrean independence since the ouster of the Italians in 1941 anticipated what was coming and, in 1961, organized the Eritrean Liberation Front in opposition. In 1991, after 30 years of continuous armed struggle for independence, the Eritrean liberation fighters entered the capital city, Asmara, in victory. The sovereign state is a totalitarian one-party dictatorship in which national legislative and presidential elections have never been held since independence. According to Human Rights Watch, the Eritrean government's human rights record is among the worst in the world. The compulsory military service requires long, indefinite conscription periods (6.5 years on average), which some Eritreans leave the country to avoid.

Microscopy

Microscopy is the technical field of using microscopes to view objects and areas of objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye (objects that are not within the resolution range of the normal eye). There are three well-known branches of microscopy: optical, electron, and scanning probe microscopy, along with the emerging field of X-ray microscopy. Optical microscopy and electron microscopy involve the diffraction, reflection, or refraction of electromagnetic radiation/electron beams interacting with the specimen, and the collection of the scattered radiation or another signal in order to create an image. This process may be carried out by wide-field irradiation of the sample (for example standard light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy) or by scanning a fine beam over the sample (for example confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy). Scanning probe microscopy involves the interaction of a scanning probe with the surface of the object of interest. The development of microscopy revolutionized biology, gave rise to the field of histology and so remains an essential technique in the life and physical sciences. X-ray microscopy is three-dimensional and non-destructive, allowing for repeated imaging of the same sample for in situ or 4D studies, and providing the ability to "see inside" the sample being studied before sacrificing it to higher resolution techniques. A 3D X-ray microscope uses the technique of computed tomography (microCT), rotating the sample 360 degrees and reconstructing the images. CT is typically carried out with a flat panel display. A 3D X-ray microscope employs a range of objectives, e.g., from 4X to 40X, and can also include a flat panel.

She bought a microscope. (Well, technically, a microscope and a bunch of petri dishes.) Haddish says she’s always been interested in science, in discovering what’s happening on a microbial level. When she first got her microscope, she says, she stayed up for three days straight looking at samples of everything. When she had a date over to her house, she’d offer him something to drink, and the moment he went home, she’d stealthily swab the cup he’d used to check out the bacteria inside his mouth. “I like to look at germs,” she says. “Put them in the refrigerator and see how they act, put them in the sun ... I look at all the juices. I had to move my lab to my bedroom once my grandma and brother moved into my house,” she says. “And I have a section in the refrigerator with a note that says, ‘Do not touch anything in this drawer!’”
