Lost Bohemia
For over a century, Carnegie Hall rented affordable studio apartments atop the famous music hall to artistic tenants such as Marlon Brando, Paddy Chayefsky and Isadora Duncan. As a privileged tenant, director Josef Birdman Astor began to videotape his neighbors whose lives intersected with decades of artistic history, but his project changed when the landlord served everyone with eviction notices for a conversion to offices. Astor chronicles the protracted battle to save the apartments and pays homage to their rich heritage.

No one knew what he looked like. And so I got to see some tape on him, that he appeared in this documentary called Lost Bohemia and he's in there just in moments and his voice, the pitch, was quite a bit higher, it was like up here, you know? I couldn't go there but I could like drop it enough where it wasn't a distraction. And refine it. - And the physicality, you find, you're kind of like tuning in, get your tuning fork right so that it's not a distraction, to the audience so that they can actually enjoy the story
Medicine for Melancholy
Waking from a one-night stand that neither remembers, Micah and Joanne find themselves wandering the streets of San Francisco, sharing coffee and conversation and searching for a deeper connection.
Mahershala Ali
Actor
Because Ali had seen a short film, Medicine for Melancholy, by this director back in San Francisco: just a couple of people walking and talking through the city — the budget was all of $12,000. He liked it. And the script this director had sent him made him cry. That was all he needed.

Best Animated Film? Oh goodness. Oh boy. This is gonna sound… Winnie the Pooh.
Blue Valentine
Dean and Cindy live a quiet life in a modest neighborhood. They appear to have the world at their feet at the outset of the relationship. However, his lack of ambition and her retreat into self-absorption cause potentially irreversible cracks in their marriage.
Mahershala Ali
Actor
I was such a fan of Blue Valentine, and I heard stories about how Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams worked on that. They lived together for a period of time as rehearsal. From nine in the morning to five at night, living in a space together. The work is really awe-inspiring.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Based on the real-life adventures chronicled by Cameron Crowe, Fast Times follows a group of high school students growing up in Southern California. Stacy Hamilton and Mark Ratner are looking for a love interest, and are helped along by their older classmates, Linda Barrett and Mike Damone, respectively. At the center of the film is Jeff Spicoli, a perpetually stoned surfer who faces-off with the resolute Mr. Hand—a man convinced that everyone is on dope.

And I've looked at Forest Whitaker. He's an extraordinary actor, but he's also a character actor. And I feel similar to him. I draw inspiration from him, because in some ways, he's kind of present against all odds. You can't necessarily say what he is. I've been watching him since Fast Times at Ridgemont High, when he was a kid. I remember when he came on-screen in Fast Times, and just his presence alone made me kind of take a step back.
Nanook of the North
This pioneering documentary film depicts the lives of the indigenous Inuit people of Canada's northern Quebec region. Although the production contains some fictional elements, it vividly shows how its resourceful subjects survive in such a harsh climate, revealing how they construct their igloo homes and find food by hunting and fishing. The film also captures the beautiful, if unforgiving, frozen landscape of the Great White North, far removed from conventional civilization.
Mahershala Ali
Actor
Best Picture: Nanook of the North [1922]. It's about the Inuits. We follow a family around, led by Nanook, whom we see trying to survive in those conditions. It feels like a movie to me, but it's one of the first documentary films. You gotta think how someone would approach telling that type of story as a documentary in a world that has only ever seen narratives told in the way in which we look at films right now.
