I remember when I saw On the Waterfront for the first time. With that, it was kind of the chemistry between Brando and Eva Marie Saint that was so gorgeous to watch on screen. And that’s a wonderful film to go back to.

De Niro’s own favorite films examine this theme: Marlon Brando’s Stanley Kowalski in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, Montgomery Clift’s George Eastman in A PLACE IN THE SUN, Brando’s Terry Malloy in ON THE WATERFRONT and James Dean’s Cal Trask in EAST OF EDEN. Each explores one man’s struggle as he confronts the unpredictability of the human condition.

There’s still nobody doing what he does in that movie. And so that really changed everything for me. Also, there was something really exciting and sad about the whole political aspect of that movie. The whole blacklisting thing.

I'd probably say 'On the Waterfront.' It's [Marlon] Brando at... his all-time best. It's Elia Kazan, who is one of the all-time great directors. And it's just the perfect mix of great storytelling, social commentary and great acting. It's political and still relevant. Those themes are still happening today. It's universal. Coming from the theater, to tell those kind of stories in film, is what's really exciting to me.

In fact, Cranston’s favourite film of all time starred Brando in one of the finest performances of a career that almost all actors dream of having one day. That film was On the Waterfront, a classic directed by the great American pioneer Elia Kazan.

The spontaneity, the aliveness, the effortlessness, the pathos, the brutishness, the sensitivity, you just want to keep studying what Brando is doing in that film, and what all the actors are doing, but particularly Brando.

He continued: "I always tell people that a really great movie is a movie that puts you in the mood for the movie while you watch. If you watch Lawrence Of Arabia, To Kill A Mockingbird or if you watchOn The Waterfront, the movie really, really just puts a spell on you.
