The Hurricane is a 1999 American biographical sports drama film directed and produced by Norman Jewison. The film tells the story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, an African American boxer who was wrongfully convicted of a triple murder in New Jersey in 1966. The film received generally positive reviews from critics. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and three Golden Globe Awards. Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Carter, and Jewison was nominated for Best Director.
