After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott. Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie, and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

think that [E.T.] was a whole new way of entertaining. I think that the whole idea of shooting from E.T.’s point of view — humans. And always making us kind of look like villains, and scary. You know really — how did E.T. feel in this world? And then the whole idea of being a fish out of the water kind of idea, it was so well done. Spielberg did just a spectacular job on that. It was literally for everyone to enjoy. I mean, it doesn’t matter — women, men, young, old — everybody could enjoy that movie.

I remember going in, this was back when they had VHS, and you go to the movie rental place, and that was probably the last time I saw it, and ET was playing on the TV. I had to finish it there.

Michael's Favorite movie ever was the movie E.T. , he wrote this himself in his book Moonwalk. He liked the movie E.T. so much he decided to work together with Steven Spielberg on the E.T. children story book. Michael related to odd looking creature E.T. , who came from space.

When Mary first meets E.T. and she is scared. And she takes her children: Elliot, Michael and Gertie away from E.T., while Elliot says that she doesn't know E.T, and that he can't leave him. And when E.T. go dead. I thought I didn't cry at E.T., but I did.

I loved E.T. Believe it or not, I don’t go to the movies. I don’t have the time, so I wait the six months or so until the DVD comes out.

I remember going to see it and it really made me cry. I was wearing one of those parkas and I put my hood up to hide the tears; it made it look like I was wearing a snorkel. I started crying towards the end and I remember putting my hood up because I was embarrassed about showing emotion [laughs]. But I absolutely loved it.

But I can tell you every line in E.T. [1982] or Time Bandits [1981].

She and her fellow young co-stars were instructed to watch Goonies, Poltergeist and Stand By Me, '80s-era fare that mixes humor, horror, psychological drama and lessons about love, family and friendship to prepare for the tone of Stranger Things. And for Brown's Eleven specifically, she told IndieWire, "They told me that the performance that they wanted me to resemble was E.T., and sort of that relationship between E.T. and the kids."

The first film that made me cry was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It’s so stuck in my memory because I was with my parents and I really didn’t want them to know I was crying; I wanted to hold that in.
