Even the films like Being There or Network, or films with the insane characters who become super popular in the American public eye. Or Face in the Crowd, like, that’s happening right now in your politics. Right now. Life goes beyond often in terms of ridiculous situations coming through.

"Arguably the greatest screenplay of all time by Paddy Chayefsky. It’s just one of the best movies ever made. Any director you love, this is in their top 5 favorite movies. It has that famous line, like, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore.” It really is about feeling fucked over by the system and not being down for it anymore. It’s truly the best screenplay ever."

And your favorite movie? It’s a cross between Network and Citizen Kane. Whenever they’re on TV, I am just totally transformed. All the movies I love are when you enter the movie thinking it’s going to be one thing and it ends up being something so simple. It always guts me.

My mom showed me a lot of movies when I was a kid—all of the movies that she loved. She loved musicals. She loved all those Elia Kazan movies. And then her passion really lies in those political thrillers from the ’70s and those [John] Cassavetes movies. She’s still an avid film consumer—she sees everything. But she’s a baby boomer, so the ’70s is her period. I’ve got to say, there’s nothing quite like watching Network [1976] as a 9-year-old .

Peter Finch in Network, the scene where he’s in the raincoat, and he comes storming in and gives that speech [”I’m as mad as hell…”] on camera. That is great acting.

This film is as true today as it was when they made it over 30 years ago. It’s just amazing how little things haven’t changed since then.

Thirty years after it had been made, for me, it was like, ‘Oh my god, how did he know this is where we were going? With how we commodify the soullessness of our culture?’
