Midday blueberry, kale, avocado smoothie! Sometimes I go pretty heavy on the blueberries in my smoothie and my brain always feels supercharged after. A new clinical study found that blueberry concentrate (30 ml/daily) for 12 weeks increased brain blood flow, brain activation and some parts of working memory in a small trial of older adults compared to placebo. The blueberry concentrate was equivalent to 230 g of blueberries, which is a lot but still doable. A couple of the compounds present in blueberries including anthocyanins, pterostilbene, and resveratrol have been also shown in rodent studies to improve brain function. I added around 200 grams of blueberries to this smoothie.
