Here is New York

Updated: 7 Sep 2020
In the summer of 1948, E.B. White sat in a New York City hotel room and, sweltering in the heat, wrote a remarkable pristine essay, Here is New York. Perceptive, funny, and nostalgic, the author’s stroll around Manhattan—with the reader arm-in-arm—remains the quintessential love letter to the city, written by one of America’s foremost literary figures. Here is New York has been chosen by The New York Times as one of the ten best books ever written about the city. The New Yorker calls it “the wittiest essay, and one of the most perceptive, ever done on the city.”

So he came over to my place one day, and he gave me two books that I now gift very regularly. One is E.B. White’s Here is New York. The other one is David Foster Wallace’s speech, This Is Water, his commencement speech.

What books are on your nightstand? I read this column every week and whenever people answer this question, I assume that they are lying. But I am telling the truth, I promise! “The Wicked Pavilion,” by Dawn Powell. “An Introduction to Global Health Delivery,” by Dr. Joia Mukherjee. “Here Is New York,” by E. B. White. “The Gods of Gotham,” by Lyndsay Faye. “Rules for Vanishing,” by Kate Alice Marshall. “The Lights of Pointe-Noire,” by Alain Mabanckou.
