Главная героиня серии, увлечённая поп-культурой девушка-подросток Лилия Романова, которая волею случая попадает в Орден книгочеев, чья задача — защита границ между нашей действительностью и миром художественных произведений. Лилия обучается в Ордене, намереваясь стать магом книгочеем и овладеть сверхъестественными способностями: возможностью испускать разрушительные лучи из глаз и рта. В Ордене девушка знакомится с другими учениками; вместе они противостоят злодеям и занимаются решением проблем, связанных, главным образом, с побегом литературных персонажей из книг. Критики встретили «Экслибриум» крайне благосклонно, положительно восприняли концепцию комикса, включая его проработанный мир, сюжет и саму идею «литературной магии», а также рисунки Андрея Родина и Алины Ерофеевой. Однако сетовали на затянутость сюжетной линии первого выпуска и переизбыток референсов на популярную культуру. Образ Романовой рецензентам вообще показался неоднозначным, поскольку одни отмечали, что читателю будет легко ассоциировать себя с персонажем, а другие посчитали героиню типичным примером «гика-социофоба».
