That's a record that I would hear over and over again, and then I just had to get my own 45'. I paid close attention anytime it was on. I would start dancing and imagining my future life in acting, probably, as I remember.

My Funny Valentine — Miles Davis Quintet

Well, I love Miles Davis. And 'My Funny Valentine' was a track on one of his records that I would put on as a wake-up alarm for myself. For awhile, during the course of a couple of movie jobs, I would have to wake myself up — and as you know, you've got to be up very early sometimes on the movies, and that's the first thing I'd hear right out of my sleep. I'd hear the first strains of 'My Funny Valentine', as if I were still dreaming. The way Miles Davis plays it is absolutely unbelievable.

Oh, I just adore that song and the lyrics. Look up the lyrics to that song while you listen to somebody sing it, maybe Tony Bennett. It's such a beautiful song. And Bill Evans, I wanted to include him because he was just such a great piano player, a great musician who moved the whole needle forward on how to play the piano and changed jazz.

For Once In My Life — Stevie Wonder

I wore out my record copy of this song from playing it over and over again. I was just crazy about it. Stevie Wonder is an all-time hero of mine, and in fact I've come to meet him in the last year. When we were recording our album at the Capitol Records Building, he his wife popped in and said hello. He's just a magical superhero in the world, I do believe.

Is That All There Is? — Peggy Lee

I had this song on a 45' when I was a kid. It opened up something in me then because she is such a wonderful performer, and she sings so sadly with this deep melancholy and gravitas. It made me cry then and it makes me cry now. It gives me goosebumps, so chilling.

We'll Meet Again — Vera Lynn

I learned the song on the piano and was singing it a lot. The film features Ty Sheridan, a wonderful young actor, Udo Kier, and Denis Lavant, who's absolutely wonderful. It's a dark, disturbing, poetical film, but we almost used that song. I love it so much.

I Fall In Love Too Easily — Gregory Porter

'I Fall in Love Too Easily' is one of my favorite songs no matter who does it, but he and I did a version of that. I sat in with his band some few weeks ago for the in-house Universal [Music Group] staff.
